I've had quite a few people ask me if I could use various fresh veggies or fruits as the growing season has gotten under way. I always take what we can eat if it's something we like. But I also tell my givers to call and check with the food pantries. There are a couple in my neighborhood/city that will accept fresh produce from local growers. Sometimes the big ones won't or can't, but there are often many churches and other civic minded groups that have pantries that will.
It's great when our gardens provide more than we can eat, but it's a shame when good food goes to waste. Food pantries often have trouble in the summer months - really anytime outside of the holidays - getting donations. Most seem to be really happy to get anything they can.
As a side note, though this is a food tribe, some pantries (private/civic run) also accept clothing and housewares for those who can't get all they need from thrift stores - maybe check on that in your area. I just thought I'd post about the need for the pantries seeing as the way the economy is right now, any of us could need help from a pantry at some point. Thanks for allowing me a stand on my soapbox.

Re: Got Extra? Call your local food pantry...
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 3:30 AMThat is a great idea - I never realised they might take fresh food, I thought it was always canned. My garden isn't producing much right now, but I will keep that in mind!

Re: Got Extra? Call your local food pantry...
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 10:34 AMOh yeah, and squash can be used as the main dish so many ways that it would be perfect for a pantry.
When pantries ask for food, it's always the nonperishable that they ask for, but (at least around here) they'll take the fresh stuff if it's available - especially at the smaller community based ones. The big one in my area is the Hunger Task Force, and I think they only take produce in large quantities from big companies. But the smaller ones just divide up what they have on a first come, first served basis.
The people I've told around here about the pantries didn't think about them either. The responses are great though when I suggest that. I'm sure the super abundance of fall tomatoes and zuchini (sp?) will supply the pantries well also.
