One of my faves is very simple and easy. Just mix a packet of Lipton Onion Soup Mix into a tub of sour cream. You can eat it right away if you want. But I like to leave it in the fridge for a few hours or even overnight to let the seasoning meld in. Not really sure if it matters. It seems like it's better if you wait a while. I like to eat it with Ruffles or those thick crunchy kettle chips. But you can dip anything in it like veggies. I suppose it would be good to put on nipples or other body parts and lick off too. Mmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!

I also like queso with cheese, chili & salsa and eat with tortilla chips. Best thing ever. Not the best for cholesterol level. But I figure once a month is okay. A treat to myself to celebrate not going insane or dying yet. : ) ( Sings Stayin' Alive to self )

sour cream & onion soup dip is a classic - and yummy :). Similar to it is the Knorr's Vegetable Soup & sour cream one...really good, and a nice change...

My last roommate had never had it before I made it for her a couple months ago. She's 27 y/o. I was eating this since I was a little kid. It's like that greenbean casserole with the mushroom soup and the Durkee onions on top. Who hasnt had that?!!! lol Now she thinks it's great. I think I'll make some today and pig out and be a couch potato today. Solomon Azar can save the world. I'll just sit back and enjoy the show. lol CHOMP!!!

And when you are feeling fancy, add a pack of thawed frozen chopped spinach and some chopped water-chestnuts to it and serve it in bread bowls. So good!

If you want to feel a little more virtuous about chips and dips (hey! it has veggies in it!), here's a great one:

      CURRIED VEGETABLE DIP

      1/2 cup sour cream
      1/4 cup mayonnaise
3 oz cream cheese at room temperature
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, or to taste
1 teaspoon curry powder (or more to taste)
      1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
      1/2 teaspoon salt
      1/4 teaspoon turmeric
      1/3 cup finely chopped celery
1/3 cup finely chopped peeled and seeded cucumber
1 scallion, trimmed and finely chopped

Whisk together all ingredients except celery, cucumber, and scallion until smooth, then stir in vegetables.

Sometimes, when I feel like tuna salad but I don't feel like a sandwich, I'll just add extra mayo and use it as a dip.

    My tuna salad/dip recipe:
    - 1 can tuna of your choice
    - 1 heaping tbsp (or 2 tbsp for dip) full-fat mayo
    - Approx 1/3 c chopped celery
    - 1 whole sweet pickle, chopped into itsy pieces
    - about 2 tsp dried minced onions
    - salt & pepper to taste

along this same thread i also like mixing a package of taco seasoning with sour cream for a quick dip for tortilla chips.

that onion soup dip is actually known as California Dip and has its own following here, so if your friend is from another state that could be why she never heard of it...

i love dipping tortilla or potato chips in cottage cheese mixed with plenty of cholula (mexican hot sauce). mmmm.... soooo good! another good dip is mix ranch dip mix with cottage cheese. basically - all the ideas posted here with sour cream, just substitute with cottage cheese! i'm just more likely to cottage cheese than sour cream in the house, plus is healthier for you.

I cant eat it anymore but used to looooove making hummus. I miss it as much as I miss garlic, pesto, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, etc...... Foods high in vitamin K. I just say no and stay away. Supposedly you can eat anything if you eat it regularly and they can work your coumadin dose around your diet. But I dont eat anything regularly so I just stear clear. The things I eat regularly are gyoza and salads without lettuce or green leafy thingys. And BEER!!! Supposedly I shouldnt drink. I always tell the doc, "DUDE!!! We've had this conversation a million times. I've been drinking regularly for over seven years and havent died yet." He always says "Youre on the highest dose of anyone I've even known and are living dangerously." I always say "Life's a killer." or "Life sucks and then you die." He just shakes his head. Then I shake mine. If alcohol was gonna kill me I'd been dead long ago.

I like cream cheese with salsa over it. A friend made it once with a raspberry sauce over it. I thought it would be gross but was pleasantly surprised.

Even better is raspberry salsa over it! Also, I've done a roasted red pepper and jalapeno (sp?) jelly over it - goes great with wheat crackers or whatever you have on hand.

I'm very well preserved. Practically embalmed. j/k I figure if I've made it this far I've got it under control. Or I'm just really fuckin' lucky. Or there is some God helping me. Or I am the Messiah or something. HA!!! Maybe there's a reason for everything. Maybe there isnt. But I do like a nice dip.

I was going to buy sour creme and chips yesterday but all the different chips were ON SALE for around four dollars? I hardly go to the store anymore and WHEN THE FUCK did the price of everything skyrocket again. Daaaaaaaaaamn!!! I got my basics and left the fun stuff. Guess I'll have to wait till someone has a party and buys all the food to enjoy snacks again. Who new Ruffles would one day be worth their weight in gold? lol JFC!!!

Yeah, even the generic or store brand chips run $3+ in my area. Do you guys have Aldi stores out there? It's a German owned company that has stores internationally. The brands there are not advertised, so you pay less even though the products are made by regular brands - like the laundry soap is Tide (I think) and the cereal is Malt-o-Meal. Their chips are pretty good and usually under $2 around here.

Thank goodness I'm not hallucinating these food prices. I went a few years without cooking (that whole single phenomenon again) and I'm in total sticker shock at the grocery store. I still think it's fun to make chips at home, if a bit messy. Get a big stack of tortillas and cut them into wedges or whatnot, fry in oil, drain on paper towels (an old roommate used newspaper & old phone books!), salt liberally, and viola! Chewy, salty, greasy, homemade chips. Nothin' like it.

        Tonight's hummus (it's 85 in Seattle tonight)

A 14oz can of chickpeas (garbanzos, ceci beans, whatever)
        1/4 C. almond paste
        1/4 C. olive relish
        2 cloves garlic, chopped
        2 T. lime juice
        1 t. cumin
        3/4 t. salt
        virgin olive oil
        paprika

Put everything from the chickpeas to the salt in a food processor and puree. Add the olive oil until you have your preferred texture.
Place in a bowl and sprinkle with paprika and drizzle with a little more olive oil. Chill and serve with pita bread or tortilla chips.

Hm, never heard this called California dip - I've lived in Wisconsin all my life and as Mr. M says, it's as much a "staple" as the green bean casserole. A lot of people I know just call it chip dip and we seem to all know what they mean. When I want it to be a bit richer, I use 1/2 sour cream, and 1/2 softened cream cheese.

We mix pesto and cream cheese with some extra salt
          maybe a little sour cream-

so fast and easy and it disappears instantly wherever we go!

Which reminds me, I had some deviled eggs the other day that seemed to be just pesto mixed with the yolks.
          Reallllllly good.

I made a caramelized onion dip for a party yesterday, and it was pretty excellent.

Chop two onions. Caramelize them. When they're done, stir in a teaspoon or so of garam masala, then let cool. Mix with one cup of sour cream. Refrigerate for a few hours, or overnight.
    • Re: Dips?

      Fri, July 3, 2009 - 10:44 AM
Patti, that sounds similar to a dip I've made a couple of times - but it doesn't call for the masala (but does call for white cooking wine). I'll have to give that a shot. Caramelizing the onions seems to give the dip the perfect flavor. My recipe calls for a little garlic and some white pepper added to the onions.

I like the one where you turn out a tub of softened Philadelphia, pour sweet chilli sauce over it and then totally coat it in chopped cilantro. Or is that a particularly Australian thing?

          The Dip Queen?
There's a joke in there somewhere.

Dunno about what is Australian, but a similar appetizer I've seen lately is an intact block of cream cheese coated entirely with sesame seeds and then splashed with soy sauce/tamari. It looks so lazy, but sort of exotic- and is surprisingly addictive.

I LOVE caramelized onions! I sweeten them a little with maple syrup.
Will have to try that dip idea.

I may well have a dip party myself, after reading all of this.

And then of course there is the pure joy that is sour cream, dark brown sugar and a slosh of rum. With strawberries, with cherries, with bananas (with chocolate cookies...)
    • Re: Dips?

      Thu, July 2, 2009 - 10:26 AM
An easy fruit dip that I've made many times is a jar of Marshmallow Fluff, and a block of softened cream cheese blended together. grapes, strawberries and bananas particularly go well with it.

When the kids were little and I didn't feel like cooking I'd announce a 'Dip Dinner' night. Refried beans with melted cheese and guacamole for use with white corn chips, sometimes clam dip too, and a cut up melon or other fruit salad.

I never make it myself but will eat it if someone else makes it. That is good stuff. It's really difficult for me to be bothered too much anymore with anything besides just opening a 40 oz Budweiser. Liquid dinner again tonight. Maybe a few handfulls of crunchy chow mein noodles just before I hit the sack. Nothing like being single and not giving a fuck or having anyone else give a fuck about me. Maybe one day I will eat healthy more regularly. Like in my next life. Hmm.

Off topic, but please let me say that I care. I know that I'm nobody to you, but I'm just someone who cares about pretty much everyone. We all deserve to have someone care about us, and it sucks to feel like there isn't someone who does.

              Wed, July 8, 2009 - 8:04 PM
Oh I know there are people that care about me. But ultimately I come home and spend my time alone. I eat alone. I sleep alone. I AM very alone. It can be nice and I probably prefer it and that is probably why I am alone. But it would be nice to be in love and live with the person. I think. I'm highly fucking irritable these days. The person would probably always be upset with me because I dont spend enough time with them. Just because I'm online or reading or writing doesnt mean I'm not with them. Just that I'm really fuckin' bizay. lol I mean really. You can't just sit there and stare into each others eyes forever can you? : )

PS - Still single and available. lol

PS2 - Youre not nobody to me. You are Donna. And thank you. : )

One of my favorite dip combos is creme fraiche blended with a little bit of honey or sugar to sweeten, with slices of persimmon dipped in it.

Other fruits work too, but crispy persimmon is definitely the best.

Hot artichoke dip with bacon is also yum - but so totally bad for you.

    2 cans artichokes (non-marinated), chopped
    1 c mayo
1 c parmesan or asiago or similiar cheese
a few slices of crisp bacon, chopped into little bits

Mix together and bake in an oven at 350 until top is golden.
You can sub 1/2 sour cream for the mayo, or crab for the bacon (add some sherry.)

        Ohhh YEAH!!

It's the only way my kids will eat anything green right now.

Sautee plenty of garlic in butter, then add
        Spinach
        Artichokes
when hot, mash a bit with a potato masher and melt in:
        Cheddar
        Cream Cheese
        Salt & Pepper

a really good dip is a "hot wing" dip i got out of a magazine awhile ago.

1/2lb shredded chicken (i've used canned chicken in a pinch and it worked fine)
    1 package cream cheese
    6tblspoons franks hot sauce
1 cup ranch (or blue cheese)
    1 cup shredded cheese

heat shredded chicken with hot suace. Cube cream cheese and add to pan with ranch; stirring frequently. once all is blended add grated cheese.

I used to toast everything bagels and spread this on top. its not healthy i'm sure but it really very yummy.

I'm talking to my mom and she just told me to mix cream cheese and mushroom soup. She says not to tell people what's in it. Because if you do they might say they dont like mushrooms. But even if they dont like mushrooms they will like the dip. So get them hooked on it first then tell them. : )

Just be sure to ask about allergies. There are some people allergic to mushrooms. Sounds good though - what do you dip in it? Veggies? Crackers? Chips? Do you serve it hot or cold?

Room temp to cooler side. Chips, veggies, crackers. Ritz.
People with food allergies shouldnt be eating things if they dont know what's in it. If someone with a food allergy asked I would tell them. : )

        >>All the popper flavour without the frying! <<

Alicia - that was exactly people's reaction! It was gobbled up, luckily it makes quite a bit so it lasted for a while, but there wasn't a bite left at the end of the night. I served it with tortilla chips and it was maybe 5 minutes of prep. The only "hard" part was remembering to leave the cream cheese on the counter in the morning so it would soften in time for my party, which doesn't matter than much cuz you could just zap it in the microwave if you forget.

I asked a friend what her favorite dish was at the party and she said it was this dip only because she kept finding her self back at the bowl. Heee.. and that's after I made mini crab cakes, foie gras canapes with pear, lox canapes, balsamic and honey chicken skewers, and goat cheese terrine.
